Etsy keyword research: how to find the right searches
Last updated:
In short
Etsy keyword research means finding the phrases buyers use when they search for your product and using them in your title and tags. A good keyword is both searched for and not overcrowded. The Listimize Keyword Finder shows Estimated Monthly Searches, competition and opportunity signals together for each keyword; search volume is an estimate, not an official Etsy number.
Why does Etsy keyword research matter?
Etsy search matches the words a buyer types against your listings' titles, tags, categories and attributes. If your product isn't described in the words buyers use, it's hard to show up in search, no matter how good it is. That's why your keyword choices decide which searches you compete in.
How can you tell whether an Etsy keyword is good?
- Demand: do people actually search for it? Etsy doesn't publish search volume, so every tool's number is an estimate.
- Competition: how many listings compete for that search? The result count shows supply, not demand.
- Small-shop chances: are the top spots held by a few big shops, or can smaller shops break through too?
- Relevance: does the phrase describe your product accurately? A popular but unrelated keyword may bring clicks, but not sales.
What does the Listimize Keyword Finder show?
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Estimated Monthly Searches | An estimate of how often the phrase is searched each month. Etsy doesn't publish official volumes; this value is estimated from observed search results. |
| Competition / Competing Listings | The number of listings competing for that search and the resulting competition level. |
| Small Shop Chance | How much room smaller shops get in the top results. |
| New Listing Success | Whether newly created listings can get attention for this search. |
| Trend | The direction of interest in the phrase over time (more reliable as observation days add up). |
| Opportunity Score | A single score that weighs demand and competition signals together so you can compare keywords. |
Keywords are re-observed regularly. When you search for a keyword we haven't seen before, a fresh analysis runs; a keyword with unknown data is never shown as "zero searches".
How to do keyword research, step by step
- Start with 3–5 core phrases that describe your product (e.g. product type + style + use).
- Check each phrase's estimated searches and competition in the Keyword Finder; flag the ones with a high Opportunity Score.
- Instead of very broad phrases, consider longer phrases that describe the product more precisely (e.g. "minimalist wedding invitation template").
- Put the best phrases at the start of your title and spread them across your tags; cover different searches instead of repeating the same phrase everywhere.
- After a few weeks, check how your listing's views and favorites have changed, and refresh your tags if needed.
Etsy's rules and Listimize recommendations
- Etsy rule: a listing can have up to 13 tags, each up to 20 characters.
- Etsy rule: a listing title can be up to 140 characters.
- Listimize recommendation (not an Etsy rule): use the keyword that best describes your product early in the title and keep it readable; Listimize recommends titles of around 76 characters.
Limitations
No tool knows Etsy's real search volume; Listimize's search values are estimates and may undercount real demand, especially for very broad phrases. Keyword data is useful evidence, but it doesn't cover every search phrase on Etsy. Base your decisions on demand, competition and product fit together, not on a single number.
