Etsy has two ad programs that work very differently. With Etsy Ads you set a daily budget and pay when someone clicks your ad on Etsy. With Offsite Ads, Etsy advertises your listings outside Etsy and you pay a percentage only when an ad leads to a sale. Either way, ads are worth it only when an ad sale still leaves you a profit.

How Etsy Ads work
An auction for each ad spot
Etsy Ads run on an auction. Etsy says two things decide how your listing does: how likely a buyer is to click it — a quality score based on factors like listing and shop history and strong titles and tags — and the bid, which Etsy sets using the likelihood of a sale and how closely your title or tags match the search.
Budget and charges
You set a daily budget and you're only charged when someone clicks. Etsy says all sellers start with a maximum daily budget of $25, recalculated weekly, and you'll never spend more than your daily budget.
Listing strategies
With a maximum daily budget of at least $25, you can choose Greater visibility, Efficient spending or Lower click cost for each listing; below $25, every listing uses Efficient spending. Etsy recommends running a strategy for at least 30 days before you judge it.
Are Etsy Ads worth it? Work out your break-even ROAS
ROAS (return on ad spend) is your sales from ads divided by what you spent. Your break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your profit margin before ad costs. Below it, ads lose money; above it, they add profit.
| Profit margin before ads | Break-even ROAS |
|---|---|
| 50% | 2x |
| 44% (the $30 order in our pricing example) | about 2.3x |
| 25% | 4x |
Example: with a 44% margin, $10 of ad spend needs about $23 of ad sales just to break even.
Reading your results
Check performance in your Etsy Ads stats instead of searching for your own listing. Etsy says it may not show your ads to you, because you're unlikely to buy your own item.
How Offsite Ads work
Offsite Ads are not a standard fee: Etsy charges them only when a sale comes from one of its offsite ads. The fee is 15% for shops with under $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days (these shops can opt out), drops to 12% at $10,000 or more, and is capped at $100 per order.
Before you spend: fix the listing first
Etsy says ads work best when listings already get interest from buyers, and that ads are unlikely to turn a low-demand listing into a top seller. Before advertising, check the first photo, title, tags, price and shipping.
How to pause or turn off ads
You can stop advertising specific listings or turn off Etsy Ads completely from the Etsy Ads page in Shop Manager. Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy explains when you can opt out of Offsite Ads.
FAQ
How much should I spend on Etsy Ads?
Start with a daily budget you can afford to learn with, then compare your ad sales with your break-even ROAS after at least 30 days — the period Etsy recommends for judging a strategy.
Can I turn off Offsite Ads?
Yes, while your shop has made less than $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days. Above that, the fee drops to 12% and opting out no longer applies.
Do Etsy Ads help organic ranking?
Etsy says ads appear only in designated ad spaces and use a different algorithm than regular search results.
Why can't I see my own ads?
Etsy places ads partly by the likelihood of a sale, so it may not show your ads to you. Use your Etsy Ads stats instead.
In the Profit Calculator you can toggle the Offsite Ads scenario on and off to see the real difference in your margin.
